OpenAI is building a new "superapp" for macOS that will combine ChatGPT, Codex, and the Atlas browser into a single app, simplifying its desktop options. The app will allow users to query ChatGPT, code, and browse the internet in one place, per a report by The Wall Street Journal.
OpenAI hopes to use this Mac app to push more "agentic" AI behavior, where the assistant can carry out multi-step tasks on a computer with less hand-holding. In practice, that could mean writing and editing code, analyzing data, and using the built-in browser to gather information, all from one window. The focus seems to be on engineers and business users who already rely on OpenAI tools for everyday work.
The company chose macOS because Apple's desktop platform lets apps interact with files and other software more freely than iOS does, which helps with long-running or complex AI tasks, according to Apple Insider. OpenAI's current ChatGPT Mac app already uses permissions to connect to other apps.
OpenAI has not shared a public launch timeline or full feature list yet. iOS and Android users will have to use separate apps for each of OpenAI's services.
