Room Keys in Apple Wallet are coming to more hotels through Salto

Smart access company Salto has announced that its hospitality platform now supports Room Keys in Apple Wallet. Here are the details.

Hotels relying on Salto can now offer support for Room Keys in Apple Wallet

In addition to car keys and home keys, one Apple Wallet feature that sometimes flies under the radar is support for hotel room keys.

Much like Apple Wallet keys that unlock cars and front doors, hotel room keys also let guests use their iPhone or Apple Watch to access their rooms and common spaces with no need for a physical card or actual key.

Adding a hotel room key to Apple Wallet is a simple process, provided that the hotel supports the feature. When that’s the case, guests can add a hotel room key by opening their reservation in the hotel or resort app and tapping the “Add to Apple Wallet” button.

Alternatively, depending on the hotel, they may also be able to add it at the front desk. You can read more about adding a hotel room key to Apple Wallet here.

That said, Salto has announced that its Salto Space Hospitality smart access platform now supports Room Keys in Apple Wallet.

In practice, that means hotels using Salto’s smart access system can now let guests add their room keys to Apple Wallet, then unlock rooms and shared spaces, including storage rooms, by tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch on the reader or holding it nearby.

Here’s Salto:

With this rollout, hotel management teams can significantly reduce or eliminate the operational challenges associated with physical key issuance and guest check-in. Room Keys in Apple Wallet are securely delivered to guests’ Apple devices, enabling remote provisioning, guest mobile check-in, and instant access, thereby optimizing property-wide check-in and front desk operations through Salto Space.

As a guest, with your room key in Apple Wallet, you can check-in easily right from your iPhone. Just add your room key to Apple Wallet, tap the “Checkin” button, and follow the steps.

After adding the room key to Apple Wallet – initiated via the Salto credential manager technology partner – guests gain instant access to rooms, amenities, and common areas simply by tapping the Apple device on the Salto smart lock reader.

Salto’s press release doesn’t mention which hotels will offer the feature first. However, the company’s website lists hospitality customers in markets including the U.S., Spain, Portugal, and New Zealand (though that does not necessarily mean all of them will support Room Keys in Apple Wallet).
