Summary

  • Samsung has confirmed the Galaxy Z TriFold is being phased out.
  • US sales will continue while supplies last, but the device is already sold out on Samsung's website.
  • The discontinuation raises concerns about the future of smartphone innovation.

After a couple weeks of rumors and speculation, Samsung confirmed on March 17 that the Galaxy Z TriFold is being phased out (via Bloomberg). The move comes just a few months after the device's launch (and less than two months since it came to the US).

In Korea, sales of the TriFold are officially ending on the 17th. In the US, sales will continue while stock lasts, but there will be no replenishment. The device is already sold out on the Samsung website, so if you still want to get your hands on one, you'll have to try your luck at a brick-and-mortar Samsung Experience Store (or find a used one).

I'll be honest — the TriFold was probably a tough sell for two reasons: price and size.

The Galaxy Z TriFold was incredibly expensive

There's no dodging the price tag on this one. At a whopping $2,900, this is the most expensive mass-market smartphone ever from a major brand. That price would have likely meant that the TriFold would never really break into the mainstream.

The Galaxy Z TriFold was a big device

When folded, the TriFold is 12.9mm thick — much thicker and less pocketable than a normal smartphone or even the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (though, impressively, a fair bit thinner than the original Z Fold model). Unfolded, it's super thin, but the 10-inch tablet form factor is still large enough that you'd only really open it when necessary.

Despite these two factors, you can't deny that this thing had a wow factor, and losing that is what I'm concerned about.

An ode to innovation

There was a time when smartphones felt innovative and exciting. Manufacturers were experimenting with slick new tech and wild form factors to compete with one another (remember the LG G Flex or Wing?). Nowadays, at least in Western markets, phones have become predictable. Even regular foldables feel boring, and some, like the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, are tough sells that we don't recommend.

When it was announced back in December, the TriFold felt like a return to that Wild West period in smartphone history. With its discontinuation, I worry that we'll just slip back to the status quo. Sure, modern phones work fine, but variety is the spice of life, right?

For its part, Samsung has not commented on any future plans (or lack thereof) around the TriFold. It seems the company simply intended it as a proof-of-concept and hasn't decided what, if anything, to do with that concept going forward. We may yet see a return when the tech becomes more affordable to produce. My hope is that the device serves as proof that there's still at least some market for these weird, wacky form factors.
