Summary
- Panasonic stops making its own TVs; Skyworth takes over production starting April 1.
- Skyworth will lead production, sales, marketing, and logistics for Panasonic-branded TVs.
- Panasonic stays on for support, quality assurance, and joint development of top OLEDs.
Well, all good things come to an end someday. Since the 1950s, if you bought a television with the Panasonic logo on it, you were buying a TV that was designed and built by one of the biggest and highest-quality Japanese electronics businesses out there. Unfortunately, Panasonic had been suffering from brutal competition in the smart TV market, which forced it to sell at razor-thin margins or risk losing it all to companies like Samsung.
Now, Panasonic has confirmed that it will no longer make its own televisions, instead placing the production line into the hands of Skyworth. However, it doesn't mean that the legendary electronics company is exiting the market entirely.

Panasonic takes a back seat and acts as quality assurance for its TVs
Skyworth will be the ones building them now
Credit: PanasonicAs reported by FlatPanelsHD, Panasonic teamed up with Skyworth, handing over the keys for the Chinese-based company to handle the "production, sales, and marketing" for Panasonic's future TVs. The handover will happen on April 1st, and Panasonic will continue to handle support for all TVs sold before and after the swap to ensure Skyworth is maintaining its quality standards.
Peter Zhang, the CEO of Skyworth's holding company, Shenzhen Chuangwei-RGB Electronics Co, was very pleased with the deal:
The two organisations share a commitment to innovation and excellence. As a top-five global TV brand, we will bring world-class product innovation supported by extensive R&D investment, alongside a rapidly expanding international footprint and established distribution network. This strategic alignment is expected to accelerate the growth of Panasonic-branded TVs across Europe
Fortunately, for those who value Panasonic's high-quality TVs, the company isn't completely backing out of the market. While it's no longer making and selling the screens, the company will still ensure Skyworth meets its high-quality demands:
Under the agreement the new partner will lead sales, marketing and logistics across the region, while Panasonic provide expertise and quality assurance to uphold its renowned audiovisual standards with full joint development on Top End OLED models,
FlatPanelsHD notes that this wasn't an abrupt sale, as Panasonic floated the idea of selling its TV business this time last year. Still, it's good to hear that the company will still have a say in what goes into every device that wears the Panasonic logo in the future.
